Jane Sassaman – inspiring quilt artist who leans toward art deco.

Jane Sassaman is an amazing quilt artist. I first saw her work on the cover of Quilters Newsletter Magazine years ago, and was thrilled to be able to take her workshop!

Here is the link to her website where you can go completely gaga over her stuff:

The workshop focused on creating a wall hanging with her techniques, with a photo or drawing of our own to begin with. I love how stylized her pieces are, and I wanted to bring that to my work.

So I attempted to get from this heliconia photo, taken Oct. 2016 at the Botanical Gardens in Hawaii:

– to this wall hanging. Jane came around the room numerous times, helping people adjust sketches, make things more interesting, get the scale right for my piece, and then “frame” the piece by cropping it in closer and really making it pop.

I have to finish a couple of other projects before I can start sewing down all the elements to the background, but I’m so inspired and excited about everything I learned.

In all, if you get the chance to take her workshop, do so!
